Designing with Reflection: Using Mirrors to Create Depth in Interior Spaces

In interior design, few elements work as intuitively, or as powerfully, as a mirror. A considered reflection can elongate sightlines, amplify natural light, and introduce architectural rhythm where it was not previously present. Yet the true impact of a mirror lies not only in what it reflects, but the craftsmanship, form and materiality of the mirror itself.

In our collections, mirrors are conceived not merely as a function, but as sculptural design pieces that act as works of art in themselves.

Reflection as Architecture

A mirror can alter the perception of a room in subtle yet transformative ways. Positioned at the end of a corridor, it extends perspective. Hung opposite a window, it gathers daylight and redistributes it deeper into the space. Placed above a fireplace or console table, it anchors the composition and establishes vertical balance.

But beyond practical function, a well-designed mirror becomes part of the design language of a space. The frame, finish and depth of profile all contribute to how the piece interacts with other styling elements in a room.

We design our mirrors with this in mind. The varied patterns and textures of our metal frames catch the light softly, introducing warmth and tonal variation through a range of finishes from polished patinas to antiqued detailing. The result is not simply reflection, but an enhanced atmosphere.

In addition to our core collection, we work closely with our clients to develop bespoke mirrors tailored precisely to their vision for a space. From subtle customisations in proportion and finish to entirely unique concepts, such as a previous striking ceiling-mounted mirror installation, we collaborate to create reflective pieces that respond to the individual nature of each project.

Each of our pieces are made within our Sussex-based Foundry and Workshops, often using traditional casting techniques including sand-casting and lost-wax processes.

When crafting our signature mirrors, once the pattern has been created, the majority of designs begin in our Casting department, where traditional lost-wax and sand-casting techniques are used to create the distinctive detailing found across each frame. Refined through precision engineering, some elements go through our CNC and Fabrication departments, where accents and hanging components are meticulously produced. In the case of our Salon Mirror, the inner frame is produced here before the process concludes with the piece being carefully hand-wrapped in a selection of richly coloured leathers, adding a final layer of texture and refinement.

This approach allows for an exceptional depth of finish. Patinated brass surfaces develop a living warmth, whilst cast textures create an illusion of movement and leather-wrapped frames introduce tactility, softness and a playful pop of colour.

With the quality of materials used, the weight and solidity of the frames are deliberate. Our vision is always to provide clients with a piece that not only suits their desired aesthetic, but feels anchored, reinforcing its presence as a timeless design feature rather than simply a fleeting decorative accessory.

How Shape Influences a Space

The geometry of a mirror profoundly influences the feeling of a room. Round mirrors form a sense of fluidity as they break up the harsh lines often found in interior spaces, introducing movement and a calmer visual presence. Convex styles in particular expand peripheral reflection, gently widening the perceived dimensions of its reflected surroundings whilst creating a statement focal point through their quietly dramatic composure.

Oval silhouettes lend elegance and vertical emphasis. Their elongated curves draw the eye upward, enhancing ceiling height and bringing refinement to narrower spaces such as dressing rooms or powder rooms.

Our linear designs are known to reinforce symmetry and structure, complementing contemporary interiors where clean lines and proportion are paramount, creating a supporting air of calm and order without visual distraction.

Textured or materially rich frames, whether cast metal or leather-wrapped, create deep tactility - meaning the frame becomes just as important as the glass within, introducing layers of craftsmanship that elevate the entire scheme.

A Timeless Presence

Designing with reflection is ultimately about both visual and material depth, and as with all design approaches, identifying what best evokes the desired emotion.

A thoughtfully handcrafted mirror introduces dimension without clutter. It is a sculptural object, shaped by heritage craft and discerning design with the intention to elevate interiors not only through what it shows, but what it adds.

Reflection, when considered carefully, has the potential to become one of the most sophisticated tools in interior design.
