A Fusion of Past and Present

Nestled just off Chelsea’s Sloane Square, a mere 5-minute stroll from our Pimlico Road showroom lies a veritably timeless hotel exuding elegance and sophistication at every turn. Having opened in September 2023, At Sloane has quickly become synonymous with timeless opulence, clearly evident in what François-Joseph Graf has beautifully designed. The hotel seamlessly blends British heritage and craftsmanship with Parisian chic while paying homage to the Arts & Crafts movement in its intricate detailing.

When the opportunity arose for us to collaborate on this project, alongside Verdome, we leapt at the chance. Producing over 700 lighting pieces was certainly no small task, but our in-house team of designers and makers was more than prepared for this project.

During the initial briefing stages, we were provided with images and original antique 19th-century pieces made by British Arts and Crafts designer William Arthur Smith Benson. “The guiding principle is always the same: to respect the original features and enhance them so they can be brought into the 21st century,” says Mr. Graf.

Our design director, David Arratoon, explains, “François-Joseph Graf had acquired a lot of original antique pieces by William Arthur Smith Benson, who was very much a part of the Arts & Crafts movement in the late 19th century. We were given both images, and in some cases, the original lighting itself both to restore and reproduce. That wasn’t too much of a challenge since we make everything ourselves, using the same processes that would have been used to make the original pieces. It was more of a challenge to bring them up to today’s standards, and make sure they complied with regulations.”

Restoring and reproducing these lights was no problem for our teams, as we are well-versed in the end-to-end process of handcrafting everything under one roof. We work collaboratively, combining modern technology such as CAD and 3D printing with traditional methods in our workshop. This ensures every detail is an exact match to the original designs.

When it came to recreating pieces from a drawing, where original components were not available to directly re-cast, our skilled Pattern Maker made models from clay to form a pattern. Once the model was complete, a mould was created which could then be transformed into a cast piece. We use traditional lost-wax casting techniques to ensure every element is preserved and the final creation closely mimics the original design to maximum authenticity.

Stepping into each room tells a story through ornate detailing, from intricate ceiling cornices to stained-glass windows and Neo-Greek friezes.
