Meet the Designers

Our design team

Behind each and every bespoke project produced at the Collier Webb Foundry is our team of specialist lighting and furniture designers.

This growing team works closely with clients on a diverse mix of projects, ranging from hotel re-fits to one-off pieces for private homes.

Their passion for exquisite materials, keen eye for composition and proficiency in CAD design enables our designers to play a pivotal role in the development of your piece.

Working seamlessly with our in-house engineers and craftsmen, they project manage all bespoke commissions from initial design concept to completion.

DAVID

YOUR PROJECTS
I’ve worked on a vast array of projects during my time at Collier Webb. The variety keeps it interesting.

WHY DO YOU THINK OUR CLIENTS CHOOSE TO WORK WITH COLLIER WEBB
I think it’s the fact that we are able to produce (almost) anything they want. We’re a team of experienced designers who can understand the aesthetics that are required and are able to combine it with manufacturing and material knowledge to advise on the best way of developing ideas in to beautiful products. Also being based in the UK it’s easy to collaborate with clients and give them an opportunity to get involved in the realisation and creation of their projects.

YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECTS
I always enjoy working with Oro Bianco, most notably we produced a large number of bespoke lighting and furniture pieces for a private villa in Dubai, it was a very challenging project which involved every department at Collier Webb. The results were impressive.

YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION
Alvar Aalto, Finn Juhl, Jacques Adnet, Dieter Rams. I was also lucky enough to work with Tom Dixon early in my career who inspired my passion for materials and manufacturing processes to drive design concepts.

MADINA

YOUR PROJECTS
I’ve worked on so many fantastic bespoke projects since joining Collier Webb. Some of the most memorable are those that require a lot of problem solving! The Dinings SW3 bespoke lights we created were fantastic to work on. From sourcing Samurai Sword wrap, “Tsuka Ito” from Japan to resolving the issue of a seam free Perspex sphere!

WHY DO YOU THINK OUR CLIENTS CHOOSE TO WORK WITH COLLIER WEBB
As we manufacture everything inhouse we can work out how to create any bespoke item our clients wish for relatively hassle free! Having the multidisciplinary knowledge or our designers, engineers and craftsmen all under one roof is a huge benefit to us and our clients.

YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECTS
I think it’s the variety of the work we undertake that I find most enjoyable. A project like the Claridge’s Royal Suite sliding doors where you’re creating something utterly one-of-a-kind, is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. I also love working on complex pieces of lighting with multiple facets, a good example of the this is the beautiful light we produced for Douglas Mackie.

YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION
Nature, space, constructivism, Ettore Sottsass, Le Corbusier, Kazuyo Sejima, Moisei Ginzburg, László Moholy-Nagy, Lyubov Popova, Piranesi and many, many more!

MATTHEW

YOUR PROJECTS
All the team here work on such a variety of projects. I’ve completed some amazing bespoke pieces using an array of materials.

WHY DO YOU THINK OUR CLIENTS CHOOSE TO WORK WITH COLLIER WEBB
Each bespoke item is both a prototype and a final product; collaboration is needed to manufacture such items which is made much easier by having all the department’s we need in-house.

YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECTS
Anything with components made from every department of the Collier Webb workshop and involving collaboration between makers during manufacture, especially in situations where we don’t at first know exactly how we can make something.

YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION
Dieter Rams, Modernism, Brutalism – Sir Basil Spence, Stanley Kubrick, Love of History

Neil

YOUR PROJECTS
As with the rest of our team, I work on many different projects but I suppose you could say I specialise in projects that involve installation. The client benefits from having both a project manager and a technical person to hand to assist in the fitting and I really enjoy getting to see the piece in its final home.

WHY DO YOU THINK OUR CLIENTS CHOOSE TO WORK WITH COLLIER WEBB
The convenience of having a “one-stop shop” of designers, engineers and craftsmen all under one roof, just an hour and a half from London is appealing to our clients. Over the years we’ve also developed an excellent little black book of other suppliers enabling us to offer a great choice of high-quality materials.

YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECTS
It’s hard to say which my favourite projects are but I really enjoyed working on the pendants lights we created for Mulberry Black for their Four Seasons NYC design. They have a minimalist design but really striking.

YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION
I find the link between function and beauty pretty inspirational! To a degree if an object functions well we find it more beautiful and if it’s beautiful we perceive it to work better. I think it’s so important to take design inspiration from all aspects of life, an iconic design that springs to mind is Reginald Mitchell’s Spitfire.
